Creates comics. Loves museums. Believes in silent strength.
Ben Gijsemans studied Audio-Visual Arts at the School of Arts in Ghent and Visual Communication at the Luca School of Arts in Brussels. The jury was so enthusiastic about his graduation project that it convinced Gijsemans to turn one of the chapters into a complete graphic novel. Hubert appeared in 2014 in Dutch, and was highly praised in the media. With translations into French, English and German, the debut also guaranteed him international success. Gijsemans received great praise for the rhythm in his comic book, and his style has been dubbed ‘slow comics’. The author is currently working on Aaron, the second part of what will ultimately be a trilogy.
Characteristic quote from the press: ‘Newcomer Ben Gijsemans creates such apt and atmospheric drawings that you have to wonder if it isn’t an experienced grandfather hiding behind the name instead of a 25-year-old.’
