Gerda Dendooven is a highly praised author and illustrator in the Dutch-speaking region. She won a Boekenpauw award early on for her first picture book IJsjes (Ice Cream, 1989) and her innovative style of drawing. Dendooven applies archetypes and absurd humour in her work. Her record of achievements includes nearly every major award in Flanders and the Netherlands, perhaps the most prestigious of which is the Flemish Cultural Prize for Children’s Literature in 2004. The jury described her as ‘the creator of a sparkling imaginary world that shimmers with gluttony and joie de vivre, and where goodness is not by definition a quality.’ In 1996, Dendooven was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize. Her books have been translated into English, French, Italian and other languages. Dendooven has also achieved international fame with her theatre texts for a young audience, which have been translated into German, Danish and Korean.
