Kristien Dieltiens was a teacher for many years before starting to write full-time in 2010. She has over fifty books to her name. She made her debut in 1997 with De gouden bal (The Golden Ball), a read-aloud picture book for children and adults. Dieltiens loves ‘stories with a deeper meaning’ that treat important themes that children will face at some point in their lives, such as loss and death. She also writes historical novels for young adults, such as the trilogy Olrac (2000), Aude (2005), and Candide (2007). Dieltiens writes in a cinematic, sensory style, and gives her characters intense, psychological depth. She writes from the point of view of young people, does not shy away from topics that are difficult to talk about, and alternates between seriousness with humour effortlessly. She always conducts thorough research for her stories, such as the award-winning Kelderkind (In the dark, 2012), for which she travelled to various cities in Germany to immerse herself in the story of the intriguing Kaspar Hauser. Her books have been translated into more than five languages.
