Michael De Cock

1972, Mortsel. Writer. Director. Actor. Journalist. Theatre company director.

De Cock writes theatre texts and novels for children and adults. His carefully constructed stories feature strong characters, sparingly described. His language and style are clear and to the point. He likes to explore philosophical themes, like the father and son relationship in Vliegen tot de hemel (2010) and Hannibal (2012), and life and death in Hoe oma almaar kleiner werd (2010). De Cock is socially engaged and has a strong interest in multiculturalism, as expressed in the series Rosie en Moussa¬. His children’s books have won many prestigious Dutch and Flemish awards, including two Zilveren Griffels and a Boekenleeuw. His work has been translated into many languages, including German, French, Italian, Japanese and Turkish.

Original title: Rosie en Moussa – De brief van papa (Querido, 2012)

Rosie and her mum live in a big block of flats on the edge of town. She hasn’t seen her dad for a while and she’s not exactly sure where he is. Until one day she receives a mysterious phone call and a letter. She discovers that her dad lives nearby, in the same town. In the prison! Together with Moussa, she goes to see him.
Funny and heartwarming.
