Kuyper has been a writer for almost forty years and has more than fifty children’s books to his name, many of which have won awards and several of which have been made into films. He writes children’s books, illustrated books and poems. Het zakmes [The Pocket-Knife] caused furore as a TV series and cinema film, winning fourteen prizes altogether, including an Emmy Award. Robin en Suze, Het eiland Klaasje [The Island of Klaasje], Robin is verliefd [Robin’s in Love], Sjaantje doet alsof [Sjaantje Plays Let’s Pretend] and O rode papaver, boem pats knal! [Oh Red Poppy, Crash Bang Wallop] all won the Zilveren Griffel award, and Robin en God won Kuyper the Gouden Griffel, the prize for best children’s book, in 1996. Kuyper’s style is poetic, clear and lively, easily penetrating the emotional world of children. In 2012 he was awarded the Theo Thijssen Prize for his entire oeuvre, a triennial prize for children’s and young adult literature. In 2014 Sjoerd Kuyper was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
