Tom Struyf

Duffel, 1983
Writer, actor, theatre maker.

Tom Struyf graduated from the Theatre Academy in Maastricht in 2007. Since then he has worked as an actor, writer and theatre maker for various Dutch and Flemish theatre groups (Theater Artemis, Onafhankelijk Toneel, HETPALEIS, detheatermaker). Important recurring themes in his work are truth and falsehood. He continually plays with these themes, with the roles we all play in daily life, and the way fiction lurks around every corner and seeps into reality in hundreds of devious ways.

Struyf doesn’t write plays, rather he creates performances. He doesn’t see himself exclusively as a writer: in his creative process, writing runs in sync with staging and designing. His productions De Tatiana Aarons Experience (Onafhankelijk Toneel, 2010) and Act to Forget (kc Monty & detheatermaker, 2012) were selected by the jury of the Theatre Festival in Flanders, for Circuit X, a project that aims to encourage promising young dramatists. Struyf himself calls the genre ‘realitytheatervideoperformance’, an exploration of the limits of reality. He registers his search using all available media, in this way beginning a meticulous reconstruction which is presented as ‘the reality’. During the 2015-2016 season, he could again be seen with the Belgian dancer Nelle Hens, among others, in Another great year for fishing.
